One of the great culinary trends of Vancouver is izakayas and the Guu franchise has become synonymous with that trend. I’ve made it a life goal to visit each Guu (except for the TO one). It’s nice that even though the menu at the locations are similar, each one has their own specialties.
After a movie, we ventured all the way to Guu Garden which is unfortunately on top of the ‘forever being renovated’ Nelson Square. Compared to its sister restaurants, this location is not as busy but the menu is as extensive. It’s hard not to order everything on the menu so we picked ones that we’ve always liked eating at a Guu. First off, the Kabocha Korokke and a salad.
The Kabocha is really a simple deep fried pumpkin and boiled egg croquette but it’s fun to eat. I always enjoyed the salads at Guu and the shrimp and avocado salad is no different. The old school romaine mix was boring but the shrimp was nicely marinated in this light vinaigrette flavour.
Next we ordered the special ‘Guuud’ spicy wings and ebi mayo.
I really liked the sweet and yet spicy wings..it was a like a combo of salt & pepper and honey in one. The ebi mayo was not my favourite of the night though; I didn’t like how heavy-handed the batter was and prefer the tempura style.
And finally, one of my ‘must-orders’..the kimchi udon with roe.
It’s like really good savoury comfort food and less oily tasting than a yaki udon. Admittedly I prefer the one from Zakkushi.
What made this meal memorable was that I coincidentally bumped into 2 Twitter friends…IRL finally ;)
I’ve always liked the Guus around town and Guu Garden is the one to go to if you want to have a quiet dinner. But out of all of them, I like the food and vibrancy of the Robson and Denman location.

I love all the Guu restaurants as well so good to know that there’s another one in town to try out. that kabocha korokke is one of my favourite things to order, but sometimes it’s sold out. and the kimchi udon is another one of my favourites and must-orders! great post teresa :)
