When this rustic French restaurant opened in the questionable corner of Fraser and Kingsway, it raised many eyesbrows. Would such a restaurant do well in such a totally off the beaten path location? After a few months, all doubts were replaced with critical acclaim.
As conveyed in its name, Les Faux Bourgeois, the minds behind this bistro wants to make French food accessible to everyone. It’s like the hipster version of Julia Child bringing the cuisine to this hood…if that makes any sense. It’s a casual dining experience which focuses on traditional French food that is a semblance to a meal served at French countryside home.
A group of us went there for a farewell dinner for a much beloved coworker. We arrived around 5:30pm on a weekday and within half an hour the restaurant was busy. We were all pretty hungry..well I knew I was as my 1 glass of wine was already hitting me.
We first shared a charcuterie of three different meats and condiments of dried apricots, cornichon, and dijon mustard.
Aside from the regular menu, Les Faux has daily specials which are scribbled on the chalkboard behind the bar. A couple of us were eyeing the duck
It was a delicious dish of very tender slices of duck with asparagus and mushroom risotto and then drizzled with generous amount of truffle gravy. The duck was nicely cooked and seasoned so it wasn’t too chewy at all. The risotto was well cooked with the added textures from the asparagus and mushrooms.
When you get a large group together, it’s an awesome reason to…try…every….single…dessert…on the menu. And yes that’s what we did.
Les Faux has one of the most amazing creme brulees. It is a simple classically made dessert and the smoothness of it was amazing..it was like spooning up silk. The milk chocolate mousse was soft, pillowy, and light
The silken chocolate tart was dark chocolate smoothness which was best eaten in small bites because of its richness. The lemon tart had more of a meringue texture which was nice but wished it had more citrus to it. The consensus for favourite dessert of the night went to the creme brulee.
We all had a nice time and enjoyed our drinks with our meals. The staff was friendly (and French accents are always cute too). It was a great dinner to be had with a great friend and coworker…she’ll be missed by everyone.

I love Les Faux Burgeoises. I live literally 3 minutes walking distance from there. Some people would agree it used to be a “questionable” area, but with so much gentrification happening on Fraser Street, that area is no longer derelict.

I totally agree with the same sentiments. First part of my childhood was in this area and it has changed so much especially with students, young professionals and couples moving in. Fraser is the next ‘Main’
