Shakin Not Stirred

Painting requires energy….the right type of energy. So indulging in a rich heavy brunch beforehand was probably not the best of ideas. The much needed energy became lethargy..but it was worth it to enjoy my favourite meal of the day.

FoodandTell and I wanted to grab a bite to eat before picking up the brushes and rollers. I suggested to hit up Shakin Not Stirred as Erin Ireland raved about it in her review.

When it was still grungey grimey Soho, it was the place to hang out, have a beer, and test your pool shark skills. Since the revamp to the more loungey venue, I’ve only been there a handful of times. But the times I’ve been there, I’ve enjoyed their night time pub-like food…it’s actually a pretty good spot to catch a Canucks game. I’m surprised it’s not as popular as it should be especially with its affordable menu and decent drinks list.

For brunch, surprise surprise, I ordered the eggs benedict and a cup of coffee

It was a grilled vegetables eggs benedict with a side of potatoes. On the menu, it said on top of foccacia bread but it arrived with english muffin instead..which I didn’t mind. It was a large portion and the simple grilled vegetables added lots of flavours to it. However with the super rich hollandaise sauce, the dish became heavy. I did like the side of potatoes where each bite was tasty and crispy.

The service on the other hand was negligent and inexperienced. For just 2 orders, she had to ask us a couple of times to confirm and barely came by to ask about our meals or offer refills. Maybe it was her first summer job? However, the night wait staff is better and friendlier.

Shakin Not Stirred is a good casual place if you want to get some drinks and bites, but for a decent brunch I may walk down a block or two further.
