Sushi Maro

In an earlier post, I mentioned that one can find a cheap meal in Yaletown. If you want something quick, healthy, and under $10 then Sushi Maro is your go to place.

It’s not the best Japanese in town but it’ll do if you need to satisfy a sushi craving. It’s a small unassuming restaurant located across the street from the Yaletown Canada Line. And like the many sushi places around…it’s not owned by Japanese people. It’s a Chinese (or Taiwanese) family run establishment which explains the Mandarin pop song playlist that blasts from the stereos.

To mix things up, we first ordered the spicy agedashi and tempura prawns

The spicy agedashi cubes in a sweet spicy chilli sauce was pretty good and convenient to eat. Usually agedashi tofu are in larger pieces which requires nimble chopstick skills to pick up. These pieces are in bite-size and I liked how the spicy sauce had a touch of sweetness to it. The tempura prawns were lightly battered so with each bite you could actually taste the prawns.

To satisfy my sushi itch, we ordered the Sunshine Roll

The sunshine roll is crab, mango, and avocado wrapped with soy sheet. I think rolls with mango in it adds a bit of freshness. The soy sheet was delicate and light..and somehow made the the roll taste healthier.

It’s nice to see an affordable place like Sushi Maro in Yaletown but if you want quality, head outside of downtown to gems like Shiro, Zipang, and Toshi.
