Restaurant with relatively good food can be marred with bad service. This is what I remembered of my meal at Juno Sushi Bistro. A bunch of us elite food digeraties (note the slight self deprecating sarcasm) went to a tasting that day and knew we needed more food afterwards..this led us back to Yaletown.
Juno is a little sushi restaurant located on Davie, just at the cusp of Yaletown. It’s a tiny cozy spot that has gotten rave reviews for it’s innovative sushis and cooked dishes. It’s operated by a tag team of Japanese chefs who, of course, take their craft quite seriously. This is evident in the presentation

The wild salmon sashimi was delicately arranged on plate of miniature raft and bridge. I sense an irony here.
We also ordered the Italian Negi Toro which is similar to a tuna tartare

It’s albacore tuna marinated with a vinegratte, mixed with green onion and served with baguette. For a marinated tartare, I felt it need more flavours or just a pinch more salt.
For the carb quota of the night, I asked if the group was interested in the Yaki Udon Carbonara

It was a decent carbonara udon noodle dish with with scallop, onion & egg yolk topped with tobiko, daikon sprout & seaweed. Carbonara is suppose to be creamy and mild but I felt it could have had an extra touch of savoury.
There were a few other sushi dishes that we ordered but we didn’t want to pause the eating with too much photo snapping.
So here comes the service. I think the waitress was on the inexperience side or just flaky. There were multiple times we had to wave her down for tea or to order more food. She didn’t take the initiative to come by to see how our table was doing. Because we were a large group we needed extra sides like wasabi and baguettes for the tartare. Each time we asked, she said she’ll have to ask the chef or manager…and that would take awhile before we got anything. But I’m seeing this as an off day at the restaurant.
The prices of the dishes are slightly more expensive than other Japanese restaurants who serve the same type of food. I probably will go back again though to try their other fusion items on the menu…I do like my sushi and fusion pastas.

I actually prefer this place for lunch – they have great daily specials and options for $12 and under and the quality of the ingredients is high.
