Fatty Cow Seafood Hot Pot

Even though Vancouver is rich of Asian cuisine, I find it surprising that there’s not a lot of hot pot places. One must, per usual, go to Richmond to find a decent hot pot place to dine at. When I heard of Fatty Cow Seafood opened to good reviews, I wanted to check it out.

I go to a hot pot restaurant about once a year because it’s hard to justify to go when I have all the equipment at home (the table top stove, big big pot, etc.) to hold a soup fondue party myself. I ended up going to Fatty Cow because it was a pre-going-away dinner for a friend and I was just curious. The night we went was cold and rainy so it was actually a perfect time to get some hot comfort food. The restaurant has to be the quaintest and cleanest place I’ve ever been to.

When we sat down, they immediately put a plastic wrap over our jackets which were draped over our chairs. Smart move! The handy plastic to protect our threads from splashes and smells.

The menu selection is pretty impressive for an all you can eat of $20-ish per person. There was a variety of meats, vegetables, seafood, and carbs. For the soup base, since we were a large group, we were able to get 2 pots: 1 of split simple tofu clear and fiery spicy broths, and the other just tofu clear broth. We wanted the contrast of basic and flavourable soup base. As you can tell by the colour, the spicy was hot but not too bad. The meal also included complimentary dipping sauces of sweet soya , sar char, and sesame sauces.

There were a few ‘premium’ items in which you have to pay extra money but we opted not to order those. Even without ordering the specialties, the quality of the regular items was pretty darn good and fresh.

We ordered way more food than what’s in the pictures. The burner seemed to have kept pace with our eat-athon and the wait staff came by often to check our pots and burners.

The main complaint I do have is that they only accept cash which is inconvenient especially for instances if a customer is paying for the meal and then extras.

As much I as like the feel and decor of restaurant, I rather have a messy hot pot affair in the comforts of my home.
